(JW Insights) Sep 19 -- Xu Zhijun, deputy chairman and rotating chairman of China's tech giant Huawei, remarked that "The United States' containment of China will cause us to face many challenges in the long term, and we must abandon illusions and use domestically-produced chips on a large scale to promote industry development in China." He made his speech at the 2023 World Computing Conference held in Changsha, China's Hunan Province during September 15 to 16.
"More than 600 Chinese entities have been included in the U.S. Entity List, and China's computing industry is moving forward under continued tightened pressure. All have been affected, from design tools, materials, and manufacturing equipment to chip products, software, algorithms, and applications." he said.
"In this case, a real issue is that we will face many challenges in the long term. On the one hand, China's semiconductor manufacturing technology will be in a state of lagging behind and catching up for a long time. Huawei believes that this state will last for a long time because only advanced processes can produce more advanced chips. On the other hand, due to U.S. export controls, it is challenging or impossible to obtain advanced chips or advanced computing systems. This will be a long time state for us, judging with our experience of many years on the future."
"Don't have any illusion about the future," he added.
"Although there is still a gap between domestically produced chips, servers, and PCs compared to those of foreign countries, this gap will always exist, and they will always fall behind if not put them into application. If domestic products are used on a large scale, it is possible to stimulate and promote the technological progress of domestic products and manufacturers, and then slowly catch up with the advanced level. Only through large-scale use can it be possible to drive the progress and development of China's computing industry, CPUs, servers based on domestic CPUs."
